2. Liliane Bettencourt
Principal heiress to the French L’Oreal Cosmetics fortune, this is the second year in a row that Liliane Bettencourt has been ranked the second richest woman in the world. She is currently also the richest woman in Europe. L’Oreal was founded by Bettencourt’s father, Eugene Schueller, in 1907, and she was involved in running the company for some time. At 92, the grand dame of L’Oreal now suffers from dementia, and was forced out of the company by her daughter, Françoise Bettencourt Meyers in 2011 because she was deemed unfit to manage it. The following year, she was replaced on the Board by her grandson Jean-Victor Meyers. She is estimated to be worth $40.1 billion.
